Fall Gutter Cleaning Checklist for Snohomish County Homeowners

In Snohomish County, gutters go from “fine” to “overflowing” in about three weeks every October. The big-leaf maples drop all at once, the firs and cedars shed needles right behind them, and then the real rain starts. Getting the gutters cleared before that sequence is one of the highest- value hour of maintenance you’ll do all year.

Why fall gutter cleaning matters here

Western Washington gets the bulk of its 35–60+ inches of annual rain from mid-fall through spring. A clogged gutter during that stretch doesn’t just overflow once — it overflows every rain for months. The U.S. Department of Energy and most building-science guidance put roof and foundation water management near the top of the list for preventing expensive damage, and functioning gutters are the first link in that chain.

What clogged gutters actually cause

• Foundation problems. Water sheeting off the roofline pools against the foundation, saturates the soil, and over time causes settling, cracks and crawlspace or basement flooding.
• Fascia and soffit rot. Water backing up behind the gutter sits against the fascia board. Wet wood rots, paint fails, and eventually the gutter pulls loose.
• Roof-edge damage. Backed-up water wicks under the shingle edge and rots the decking at the eave — the most expensive part of the roof to repair.
• Ice and heavy-load damage. A gutter full of wet debris is heavy; add a cold snap and it can bend hangers or tear away.
• Landscape washout and siding splash-back. Overflow craters the beds below and throws mud and organic staining up onto the siding.

DIY fall gutter cleaning checklist

Before you start: a stable ladder on firm ground, someone home with you, work gloves, safety glasses. If it’s a two-story or the roof is steep, stop here and hire it out — see the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission on ladder-fall injuries, which spike every fall.

1. Scoop the troughs. Work from the ladder, not the roof. Bag the debris; don’t drop it in the beds.
2. Check every downspout. Flush from the top with a hose. If water backs up, the elbow or the vertical run is clogged — clear it from the bottom or tap it loose.
3. Flow-test the whole system. Run water at the far end of each run and watch it reach the downspout. Standing water means a low spot or a pitch problem.
4. Check the pitch and hangers. Gutters should fall about ¼ inch per 10 feet toward the downspout. Re-secure loose hangers and spikes.
5. Look at the seams and end caps. Reseal anything dripping.
6. Inspect the fascia behind the gutter. Soft, dark or peeling wood means water’s been sitting there — address it before winter.
7. Clear the roof valleys while you’re up there — needle piles in the valleys feed the next clog.
8. Point the downspout extensions away from the foundation — at least 4–6 feet out.
